Can You Replay Missed Chapters in a Story Game? What to Check Before Buying

Often, but “chapter select” can mean anything from replaying a scene without changing your story to restarting the game from an earlier point and replacing later progress. Before buying a narrative game, check when replay unlocks, whether choices carry forward, what happens to collectibles, and whether the feature works the same in your edition and on your platform. The menu label alone does not answer those questions.

Does chapter select unlock immediately, or only after finishing the story?

Look for the unlock condition in the game’s manual, official FAQ, or a developer update. Some games let you revisit chapters you have already reached during a playthrough. Others reserve chapter select for after the ending. The Feral Interactive manual for *Life Is Strange* (Steam) says players can select chapters they have already reached, or the first chapter of an episode they have not started. By contrast, a guide for *The Quarry* reports that chapter select becomes available after completing the story once. These are game-specific rules, not a genre-wide standard. *Life Is Strange* manual · *The Quarry*: How to Unlock Chapter Select

Look for the exact milestone: reaching a chapter, finishing an episode, completing the full story, or starting a new run. If you want to replay something as soon as you miss it, a feature that unlocks only after the ending may not meet your needs. Also check whether replay is available from the main menu or only through a particular save file or mode.

Section 2

Will replaying a chapter overwrite your current story?

Find out whether replay offers a separate “collectibles” or “replay” mode, an alternate save slot, or a choice to save new story progress. Those options have different consequences. In the *Life Is Strange* Steam manual, restarting from a chapter deletes progress beyond that point in the current save slot. The manual describes slots 2 and 3 as ways to experiment without overwriting the earlier slots. It also distinguishes collectible mode, which lets players look for missed photographs without changing choices saved from that chapter. *Life Is Strange* manual

Before buying, ask a precise question: “If I replay chapter three and make a different choice, does the change save into my current story, a new slot, or nowhere?” Check whether the game has manual saves or multiple slots, and whether returning to the chapter rolls back later decisions. A flowchart, recap screen, or the ability to watch a scene again does not by itself establish that you can branch the saved story safely.

Section 3

Do new choices affect later chapters automatically?

A replay may record a changed choice without rebuilding the story state in chapters you already played. Check whether you must continue from the replayed chapter through the ending for consequences to take effect. *The Quarry* guide describes a sequential system: after replaying an earlier chapter, players must play onward to carry the run through later chapters, and chapter select becomes unavailable until completing the story again. Treat this as a title-specific example, and confirm it for the game you are considering. *The Quarry*: How to Unlock Chapter Select

This distinction matters if your goal is to see how one earlier decision changes a later scene. The relevant feature is not just access to the earlier chapter; it is whether the game lets you carry the new branch forward, and how much of the intervening story you must replay. Search for those details in the official manual, support pages, or developer notes rather than assuming chapter selection is a free jump between story points.

What happens to collectibles and completion progress?

Check whether a missed item can be collected in a dedicated mode, whether the game records it permanently, and whether restarting erases items found later. The *Life Is Strange* manual explicitly separates collectible mode from story-changing replay. Naughty Dog’s support article says *The Last of Us Part II* offers Chapter Select and New Game+ as ways to find missed artifacts and journal entries, and that the Chapter Select screen can show missed collectibles for a chapter. Those examples show why it is useful to look for a clear description of both the replay mode and the collection tracker. *Life Is Strange* manual · Naughty Dog: How do Collectables such as artifacts and journal entries work?

Some games also tie collectibles to mutually exclusive choices, or reset later progress when you restart early. For *The Quarry*, the cited guide reports that replaying a chapter resets collectible progress from that point onward, so later chapters must be played again to rebuild it. That is a useful warning to look for, not a rule that applies to every narrative game. *The Quarry*: How to Unlock Chapter Select

Does the answer depend on platform, edition, or game version?

Verify the version you plan to buy: platform, generation, edition, and current update where relevant. Manuals may describe a particular release, and a feature can arrive in a patch after launch. In a Steam developer announcement, the *Dordogne* team introduced Chapter Selection in an update and described its collectible summary, skipped cinematics, and compatibility with past saves. That announcement illustrates why older reviews or launch-era feature lists may not describe the current game accurately. Dordogne developer announcement: “Chapter selection in Dordogne!”

Also check whether progress transfers between the platform versions you might use. 2K’s *The Quarry* FAQ says the game has no cross-generation or cross-platform saves, and separately describes edition-specific content such as early access to Death Rewind in the Deluxe content pack. Those details do not determine chapter-select behavior, but they show why “the game supports this” may be too broad: your edition and save setup can affect what is available to you. 2K Support: The Quarry: FAQ

A quick pre-purchase check

Use the store page to identify the exact edition and platform, then search the official manual or support site for “chapter select,” “replay,” “collectibles,” and “save.” Look for answers to these four questions:

Unlock: When does chapter or scene replay become available?

Story: Does replay preserve the current save, overwrite it, or offer a separate slot?

Progress: Do changed choices carry forward, and must you replay subsequent chapters?

Collections and version: Are missed items retained, and do the rules apply to your edition and platform?

If an official source answers only whether chapter select exists, it has not yet answered the questions that determine whether it will help with your particular goal. Look for explicit wording about unlock timing and save effects. If those effects remain unclear, treat the feature as unverified before purchase rather than assuming you can safely revisit a single missed scene.
