How to Mute a Tamagotchi When the A+C Shortcut Does Not Work
If the familiar A+C shortcut does nothing, first check which Tamagotchi model you have and what screen it is on. The Original Tamagotchi and Connection use the shortcut differently, while the Uni has a sound option in Settings. On some models, an active care call also blocks the sound control. Use the steps below to identify the right method, confirm that mute took effect, and avoid resetting your device unnecessarily.
1. Identify the model before pressing buttons
Look at the device name on the shell, packaging, or startup screen. “Original Tamagotchi” and “Tamagotchi Connection” are separate product lines, and their official instructions do not give identical steps. A Nano collaboration model may have yet another version of the controls; use its own instruction sheet if neither method below matches.
The Original Tamagotchi’s official FAQ says to press A while holding C to switch sound on or off. The Connection’s FAQ says to press A and C together to open a sound setting screen, then select ON or OFF. The Connection method is a short menu sequence, not simply a toggle. (Original Tamagotchi FAQ; Tamagotchi Connection FAQ)
2. For an Original Tamagotchi, use the main character screen
Return to the screen showing your character. Hold C down, then press A while continuing to hold C. The official FAQ describes this as “press A while pressing C”; its Original web manual specifies that the action is from the main screen and that a short beep signals the change. Try a deliberate hold-and-press sequence rather than tapping both buttons at once. (Original Tamagotchi FAQ; Original Tamagotchi web manual)
Treat this as a toggle: repeating the shortcut changes sound back on. If there is no response, check that the character screen is visible and that each button registers when pressed on its own. Do not keep repeating the shortcut without checking, because a second successful press may restore sound.
3. For Tamagotchi Connection, open and confirm the sound menu
On the Connection, return to the character screen, then press A and C together. When the sound setting screen appears, use A to choose OFF and press B to confirm. To restore sound later, repeat the sequence and choose ON. The official Connection FAQ documents the A+C menu and ON/OFF selection; the Bandai manual for this model also says the setting cannot be changed while the character needs care. (Connection FAQ; Bandai Connection manual)
If the menu does not open, make sure you are on the character screen rather than another screen or an active game. Then check whether the Attention icon is highlighted. The official FAQ explains that the clock screen is available when Attention is not highlighted; for sound, it is safest to clear any active care need and return to the character screen before trying again. (Connection FAQ)
4. If you have a Tamagotchi Uni, use Settings
The Uni does not use the classic A+C shortcut for sound. From the device menus, open Settings and choose Sound. Use A to select the sound setting, B to confirm, and C to exit, following the Uni manual’s control guide. The manual says that turning sound off also disables calls and sound effects. (Tamagotchi Uni instruction manual)
This distinction matters if A+C appears to do nothing: it may be the wrong control sequence for your model. The Uni manual also describes sound as a setting separate from screen brightness, so make sure you have opened Sound rather than Brightness before changing options.
5. Check whether a care need or screen state is blocking the control
Some models restrict sound changes while the character needs immediate care. Bandai’s Pac-Man Tamagotchi instructions say sound cannot be changed when the character needs care, and list sound ON/OFF among the limited controls available in certain special states. Its control flow is model-specific, so use the manual supplied with your character edition rather than assuming every Nano behaves the same way. (Bandai Pac-Man Tamagotchi instructions)
For a Connection, attend to any highlighted care need, exit a game or menu, and return to the character display. For a Uni, navigate to Settings instead of relying on a button chord. If the device is in a special animation or event screen, wait until its regular menu becomes available, then retry the documented procedure.
6. Confirm the result, then troubleshoot button response
After using the right method, verify the change in a low-risk way: the Original’s manual says a short beep accompanies the sound toggle; on a menu-based model, confirm that OFF is selected before leaving. Remember that silence can include care calls, not just background effects. The Original FAQ warns that calls may not be audible while sound is off, and the Uni manual likewise says calls and sound effects are disabled. (Original Tamagotchi web manual; Tamagotchi Uni instruction manual)
If the control still fails, press each button separately on a normal screen to see whether the device registers it. Check that you are pressing the labeled A, B, or C button, not an adjacent reset control. Avoid pressing reset as a mute workaround: it is not the sound setting, and some models warn that reset can erase play history or stored progress. If the buttons appear unresponsive or the screen behaves incorrectly, consult the exact model’s Bandai support page or instruction sheet before considering a reset.
A quick model-based decision
- Original Tamagotchi: From the character screen, hold C and press A; repeat only if you intend to toggle sound back on.
- Tamagotchi Connection: From the character screen, press A+C together, choose OFF with A, and confirm with B.
- Tamagotchi Uni: Open Settings, choose Sound, select the desired setting, and confirm; calls and effects are silenced when sound is off.
- Nano or another edition: Check its own manual, then retry from a normal screen after clearing any active care need.
The practical fix is usually to match the sequence to the device and its current screen. Once OFF is confirmed, keep in mind that the same setting may also silence attention calls; turn sound back on through that model’s documented control when you want audible reminders again.
