Require an explicit transition before a private chat reaches any outward surface

A private conversation should not become a recommendation or public artifact merely because it was saved, summarized, starred, used in a memory, or opened on another screen. Use privacy as a routing rule, not a label. Give every object a state—private source, private derivative, draft for review, limited share, or public—and list every possible output surface: in-chat suggestions, home recommendations, notifications, search, profile highlights, share previews, public pages, and model-improvement pipelines. For each route, record whether it is allowed, what user action authorizes it, which preview appears, and how to reverse it. The critical boundary is that no inference, excerpt, attachment, title, or generated summary may inherit a wider audience merely because its source was processed. Test with harmless unique content before trusting the route.

Section 1

Inventory source objects and their derivatives

List conversation text, attachment, transcript, generated title, summary, saved memory, tag, embedding or retrieval record, moderation marker, notification snippet, share preview, export and public post as separate objects. Mark the source, current state, owner, audience and retention path. A private chat can create a summary that appears harmless yet still carries a rare detail or relationship clue. OWASP describes sensitive-information disclosure as a risk across model outputs and connected components, supporting minimization, sanitization and access boundaries. Do not assume that a derivative becomes less sensitive automatically. It needs its own review and should inherit the narrowest source boundary until an explicit transition is approved.

Section 2

Create a state-by-surface routing table

Put content states in rows and output surfaces in columns. Private source and private derivative should normally be blocked from public profile, discovery, public link and promotional recommendation. A review draft may appear only in a private preview owned by the same account. A limited share needs a named audience and revocation path. Public content requires a deliberate publish action after a final preview. Separate recommendation routes: a private chat can influence an in-account suggestion without the text itself being shown, but the service should explain the scope and provide controls. Record allowed, blocked or unknown for every cell. Unknown is not permission; keep the route closed or avoid sensitive content until the current product documentation answers it.

Section 3

Require a preview that shows audience and source

Before any outward transition, the preview should show the exact text or media, account identity, destination, audience, link visibility, download behavior and whether a title, thumbnail or excerpt will be generated. Review the rendered result, not only the editor, because cropping, link cards and notifications can expose material outside the selected passage. If another person appears or is described, obtain their permission for the proposed audience rather than relying on consent to the original private conversation. FTC guidance notes that online material may reach wider audiences and be copied after posting. A warning alone is not enough; the interface needs a clear cancel route and the private object must remain unchanged when the transition is cancelled.

Section 4

Separate recommendation, notification, sharing, and improvement controls

Do not combine every outward use under one switch called personalization or sharing. Recommendation ranking, notification previews, contact discovery, public publishing, link sharing, feedback attachment and model-improvement use have different recipients and consequences. For each control, note whether it governs future processing, existing derivatives or both. Turning off public discovery should not be read as deleting an existing share link. Removing a post should not be read as withdrawing a feedback package. Disabling notifications should not be read as clearing a generated title stored in history. The NIST Privacy Framework encourages examining the entire processing life cycle and connected actors, which makes these separate rows more useful than a single privacy score.

Section 5

Run blocked-route and rollback tests

Create a harmless conversation with a unique phrase and one neutral attachment. Keep it private, then search home recommendations, global search, notifications, profile, share picker and signed-out views. The content should not appear on surfaces that the routing table blocks. Next create a review draft and cancel before publishing; verify that no public URL, preview, notification or follower activity remains. If a limited-share test is appropriate, send it only to an address you control, revoke it and retest the landing page. Record exact version, account, device, route, timestamps and observable results. A successful test shows only the paths tested, not inaccessible internal systems. Any unexpected appearance should stop use of sensitive material while the current official support route is consulted.

Section 6

Design a bounded response to an accidental exposure

If private content appears outwardly, first restrict or remove the visible artifact through the documented control, revoke links when possible and pause the source feature. Record the object identifier, surface, audience, time, settings and actions without duplicating the sensitive text into a new report. Check notification previews, profile cards, search, recommendation caches, other signed-in devices and recipient copies. Notify affected people privately when your sharing exposed their information, using only verified facts and a practical correction. Do not claim that deletion retrieved screenshots or downloads. Finish by identifying the failed transition—wrong inherited state, missing preview, broad audience, stale cache or unclear control—and update the routing table. Recheck after relevant product changes rather than monitoring continuously.

Common questions

Can a private chat influence recommendations without publishing its text?

It may, depending on the service. Keep ranking influence and displaying an excerpt as separate routes and verify both controls.

Is a confirmation warning enough before publication?

No. A useful transition also shows the exact artifact, identity, destination, audience and a clear cancel path.

Does deleting an accidental post remove every copy?

No. It can remove a controlled artifact, while viewer downloads, screenshots, previews or caches may follow separate paths.
