Separate five data controls before deciding about AI training
When an AI service may use chats to improve models, first separate five controls: visible history, cross-chat memory, model-improvement permission, feedback submission and temporary conversation mode. They may sit on different screens and affect different data. A sixth action—deletion—also does not necessarily reverse earlier use. Read the current first-party explanation for your account and region, choose before entering content, and verify the setting with a low-sensitivity test instead of relying on a generic privacy label.
Name the five switches without combining them
History decides whether a conversation remains visible for later access. Memory decides whether details can personalize future exchanges. A model-improvement setting addresses whether eligible content may support future systems. Feedback can submit the surrounding conversation under a separate rule. Temporary mode may change history, memory and improvement, while still allowing short operational retention. Write each as its own line and copy the exact current label. OpenAI and Google both describe these controls separately, which shows why “I turned privacy on” is too vague to audit. Do not assume that an enterprise, school or API account follows consumer defaults.
Check default, scope and effective time
For model improvement, record whether the current setting is on or off, who selected it, whether it covers past content or only future and resumed chats, which devices share the account setting, and when the change becomes effective. Check whether files, voice, images, connected-app excerpts or generated content are included. Read the account-specific notice, not an old screenshot. FTC guidance stresses that providers should honor their stated privacy and confidentiality commitments; it does not create one shared interface. Save the date and page URL because wording, product tiers and regional choices can change.
Consider feedback a separate submission
A thumbs-up, thumbs-down, report or written comment can be more than a rating. Current OpenAI guidance says associated conversation content may be used when a user chooses to provide feedback, even when the broader training choice is off. Other providers define their own scope. Before submitting, open the explanation beside that control and review what context, attachments and metadata accompany it. If the issue can be described without a private detail, remove that detail first. Do not use feedback as the only way to request deletion or account support; follow the service’s documented privacy or support route.
Use temporary modes with precise expectations
Temporary chat is useful only when its boundaries match the task. Verify whether it appears in history, creates or reads memory, contributes to model improvement, remains briefly for security or reliability, includes connected-app data, and changes when feedback is sent. Google currently explains a limited operational retention period even when Activity is off; OpenAI describes temporary chats under its own rules. These are product examples, not universal promises. Start the mode before typing, confirm its visual indicator, avoid unnecessary identifiers, and close the session when finished.
Record a choice you can verify and revisit
Make a short control receipt: provider and account type, exact setting label, selected state, date and time, device, content scope, feedback rule, temporary-mode boundary and next review trigger. Then sign in on another device or reopen settings to confirm the same state. If exporting account data is available, use a harmless sample to understand what is represented, not to infer training status from absence. Revisit the receipt after policy notices, new integrations or account changes. The practical choice is prospective and deliberate: select the narrowest data use that fits your purpose before sharing, and change course when the current terms no longer match it.
Common questions
Does turning off model improvement delete old chats?
No. Saving, training choice and deletion are separate controls; use the documented deletion path for history.
Can feedback include the conversation?
It may. Read the feedback notice before submitting and remove unnecessary private context.
Is temporary chat stored nowhere?
Do not assume that. Check the provider’s current short-term retention and safety or reliability wording.
