Which Air Purifier Filters Can Be Cleaned or Must Be Replaced?

If you are maintaining an air purifier, first identify the exact filter and model; then follow the cleaning or replacement instruction for that part. A removable pre-filter may be washable or vacuumable, while a HEPA or carbon filter assembly may be replace-only. Those are common patterns, not reliable rules for identifying an unknown filter by sight. For example, Blueair documents washing a fabric pre-filter on specified Blue Signature models, while Dyson’s TP07 manual describes replacing its filter assembly. [Blueair’s Blue Signature care instructions](https://www.blueair.com/blogs/blue-signature/how-do-i-clean-the-pre-filter) and the [Dyson TP07 owner’s manual](https://www.dyson.co.uk/content/dam/dyson/maintenance/user-guides/en_GB/airtreatment/Purifiers/TP07/TP%20Owner%20Manual.pdf) apply to those products; neither establishes a universal rule for other purifiers.

Section 1

How can you tell whether a filter is cleanable?

Start with the model number on the purifier, then find the matching manual or manufacturer maintenance page. Check the part name and its exact care verbs: “wash,” “rinse,” “vacuum,” or “replace.” Confirm the instructions refer to the removable component you have, not simply to the purifier’s outer grille or fabric cover.

Appearance is not proof. A mesh-looking surface could be a pre-filter, a protective screen, or part of a replace-only assembly. Likewise, “HEPA” or “carbon” alone does not tell you the care method for every product. If the manual is missing, search the manufacturer’s support site by model number or contact support. Until the instructions identify a permitted method, don’t wash or vacuum the filter.

Section 2

When is vacuuming or washing permitted?

Blueair’s instructions for the fabric pre-filter on the Blue Signature Large and Medium say to turn the purifier off, unplug it, remove the fabric cover and vacuum it with a soft brush attachment for routine cleaning. For a deeper clean, the instructions permit hand washing or a gentle machine wash, without bleach or harsh chemicals. They say to air-dry the fabric completely before pulling it back over the main filter. Do not tumble-dry the fabric or reinstall it while damp. These steps are specifically for that fabric pre-filter, not permission to wash the purifier’s internal filter.

A separate example is the Honeywell Store retailer’s Air Purifier Cleaning Guide for its washable permanent filters. It instructs users to turn off and unplug the purifier, rinse the filter, and air-dry it completely before reinstalling it. It identifies select AirGenius and QuietClean models with permanent ifD filters or washable plastic mesh pre-filters. The guide distinguishes these washable filters from standard True HEPA and disposable carbon pre-filters, which it says are not washable and should be replaced. Apply that distinction to the Honeywell filters covered by the guide, not automatically to similarly named parts from other brands. [Honeywell Store cleaning guide](https://www.honeywellstore.com/store/product-support/clean-honeywell-air-purifier.htm) gives the model and filter-specific context.

Section 3

When must a filter be replaced?

Replace a part when its manual says it is non-washable or replace-only, or when the model’s instructions call for a new part. The Dyson TP07 manual, in its filter-changing sections, covers opening the filter covers, replacing the filter, and resetting the filter-life reminder; it explicitly calls the replaceable filters non-washable. Treat its filter as a replacement part under that model’s instructions. Do not transfer a cleaning method from another Dyson model or brand. [Dyson TP07 owner’s manual](https://www.dyson.co.uk/content/dam/dyson/maintenance/user-guides/en_GB/airtreatment/Purifiers/TP07/TP%20Owner%20Manual.pdf).

Section 4

Reset reminders after the specified maintenance

Replacement reminders are model-specific prompts, not universal timers. For the TP07, follow the manual’s filter-life reminder and reset procedure after replacement. Other purifiers may use different indicators or service schedules; consult that model’s manual instead of relying on a fixed interval.

Follow the replacement instructions for the filter configuration supplied with your purifier. The Dyson manual distinguishes a combined HEPA+Carbon filter from separate HEPA and carbon filters, with different reminder-reset controls for the separate components. Confirm the correct configuration before pressing a reset control. Resetting a reminder does not clean a filter or replace the work it records.

Section 5

A safe decision sequence for an unknown filter

This sequence avoids guessing from color, texture, labels such as “HEPA,” or the fact that a part can be removed. The decisive evidence is the maintenance instruction for the specific model and component.

Find the purifier’s model number and the filter’s part name or code.
Locate the matching manufacturer manual or support instructions; confirm they cover that model and component.
If they explicitly permit vacuuming or washing, follow the stated method and limits. After permitted washing, follow the stated drying method and wait until the part is completely dry before reinstalling it.
If instructions say replace, treat the filter as replace-only. If care guidance is missing or ambiguous, pause and verify with the manufacturer before cleaning.
Refit the correct parts as instructed. Reset a replacement indicator only using the model-specific procedure, and only after replacing the relevant filter.
