Run a traceable front-desk package queue during peak volume
Peak-volume package management works when the front desk controls flow, not when staff simply stack faster. Before the surge, define which parcels the desk accepts, where couriers wait, where unprocessed arrivals sit, how accepted items receive an internal reference, which storage addresses are available, and what triggers a resident notice. During the surge, protect one-way movement from arrival to intake, storage, ready notification, collection, and closed record. A courier's delivered message is not the desk's ready message. Separate intake from exceptions
Create three physical lanes before the first batch: awaiting intake, exception review, and processed for storage. The awaiting lane contains only parcels not yet matched or recorded. Exception review holds wrong names, unreadable units, visible damage, ineligible services, or multi-piece discrepancies without opening contents. Processed parcels leave the table immediately for a numbered zone, shelf, bay, or approved overflow address. Keep returns and outgoing items elsewhere. A large parcel needs a suitable low or designated position; an unmatched label needs review; a normal parcel needs the next empty address. Send a ready notice only after the item is retrievable. During a surge, an overflow room or locker assignment may differ from the usual counter, so location belongs in every notice. Pace notices to the service capacity instead of releasing an entire backlog into one queue. Count only operational measures that support improvement: arrivals by interval, time from intake to retrievable storage, failed searches, incorrect locations, repeated notices, queue interruptions, and parcels still open at handoff. Review where flow stopped, then change one boundary or step for the next surge. Do not use a public staff ranking or resident comparison; the aim is a clearer system with fewer untraceable handoffs.
