How to Troubleshoot a Failed Tamagotchi On Playdate

If a playdate between two Tamagotchi On series devices fails, first confirm both devices support the same connection feature, then restart the playdate from matching standby screens. Align their infrared (IR) sensors, keep them about two inches apart, angle them toward each other, and move out of direct sunlight or bright light. The On manual also warns that placing the devices too close can prevent a connection. These checks address common setup problems without assuming every Tamagotchi model can play together. Section 1

1. Confirm both devices can play together

Start with the model names printed on the devices or packaging. The Tamagotchi On instructions specify connection with another Tamagotchi On device and state that an On cannot connect to devices outside the Tamagotchi On series. Sharing the Tamagotchi name, having similar screens, or offering a connection menu does not establish compatibility. If either device is from another series, check that model’s own manual before troubleshooting sensors; a physical connection cannot overcome incompatible communication systems. Be particularly careful with the word “Connection”: it names more than one Tamagotchi product generation. Bandai’s FAQ for the 2024 Tamagotchi Connection revival says that it cannot connect to 2000s products, Tamagotchi Uni, or Original Tamagotchi. That is a different device family from Tamagotchi On, but it illustrates why you should verify the exact model rather than infer compatibility from the series name alone. Tamagotchi Connection FAQ

2. Put both devices into the same playdate mode

On each On device, open the connection menu and select TAMAGOTCHI, then choose PLAYDATE. Wait until both screens show the connection standby screen. Once both are ready, point the devices toward each other and press B as the manual directs. If one device is on a different connection activity, back out and select PLAYDATE on both before trying again. Different connection activities may expect different behavior, so matching the option removes that source of failure. Tamagotchi On instruction manual

If the screen displays the manual’s retry prompt, press B to return to standby and start again. During the connection attempt, avoid pressing other buttons; the instructions caution against button presses while the connection screen is shown. Let the devices complete the attempt before changing their position or navigating away. Tamagotchi On instruction manual

3. Adjust distance, height, and angle

The On manual gives a narrow physical setup: keep the connection components level, point them at each other, and use the illustrated distance and angle as a guide—about two inches apart and roughly 20 degrees. Try small adjustments rather than holding the units together or separating them widely. The manual explicitly says the connection may fail when the devices are too close. A practical sequence is to place them level, leave a small gap, align their upper connection areas, then press B on the standby screens. Tamagotchi On instruction manual

4. Change the lighting and clear the path

Move indoors or into shade if the devices are under direct sunlight or strong lighting. Bandai warns that bright light can interfere with connection. Keep the sensor areas facing one another with no hand or object covering them. Then return both units to PLAYDATE standby and retry. Change one condition at a time—lighting first, then alignment or spacing—so you can tell which adjustment helped. Tamagotchi On instruction manual

5. Use a clean retry sequence

After checking compatibility and positioning, use this reset sequence for the connection attempt:

  1. Back out of the failed attempt on both devices.
  2. Select TAMAGOTCHI → PLAYDATE on each device.
  3. Wait for both connection standby screens.
  4. Put the devices level, about two inches apart, angled toward each other and away from bright light.
  5. Press B to begin, then leave the buttons alone while the connection runs.

This sequence follows the On manual’s stated setup. It is a troubleshooting routine, not a guarantee: a persistent failure may come from a device issue or a mismatch not covered by the quick-start steps. Do not reset either device as an early troubleshooting step; a reset may affect saved play data, and it is not part of the manual’s playdate procedure.

6. Know when to stop repeating the same attempt

If one device is not actually an On-series model, stop and check its model-specific documentation for supported connections. For example, the newer Tamagotchi Connection has its own compatibility limits, and its troubleshooting guidance uses different distance and angle instructions from the On manual. Do not transfer one model’s measurements or connection steps to another model without checking its manual. Tamagotchi Connection FAQ

If both units are confirmed On-series devices and repeated careful attempts still fail, note what you have already checked: model names, PLAYDATE selected on both, standby screens, spacing, alignment, and lighting. Consult the support information for the specific device or its packaging. This gives support a clear description of the failure without risking unnecessary changes to either device.
