How to Stop iPhone Apps from Automatically Installing on Apple Watch
To stop compatible iPhone apps from appearing on your Apple Watch automatically, open the Watch app on your iPhone, tap My Watch, tap General, and turn off Automatic App Install. You can still install selected apps yourself. If apps are already on the watch, remove them separately; changing the setting does not remove apps that have already installed. Apple’s current Watch guide confirms that compatible iPhone apps install automatically by default and describes how to manage app downloads and manual installs. Turn off automatic installs in the iPhone Watch app
- Keep your Apple Watch paired with the iPhone you use to manage it, then open the Watch app on that iPhone.
- Tap My Watch if you are not already on that tab.
- Tap General.
- Switch Automatic App Install off.
The key is the General setting called Automatic App Install. It controls whether a watch-compatible version of an app on your iPhone is automatically installed on the watch. With it off, installing an app on the iPhone should no longer add its Apple Watch version automatically; apps already installed remain available until you remove them. The menu labels or organization can vary with software updates, so if the setting is not where you expect, check the Watch app’s General section and confirm you are using the paired iPhone.
What changes, and what stays available
Turning off automatic installation changes the default for compatible iPhone apps. It does not block you from using the App Store on your watch, and it does not require removing the app from your iPhone. To add a watch app later, use the Watch app’s My Watch tab and install it from the available apps list, or download it from the App Store on Apple Watch. Apple documents both the automatic default and the option to install specific apps manually. Apple Watch User Guide: Get apps in the App Store on Apple Watch
This is useful if you want to choose which companion apps appear on the watch while keeping their iPhone versions. For instance, you can leave the iPhone app installed, disable automatic installs, and add only the watch apps you actually want. The setting is about installation, not updates: Apple lists automatic app downloads and automatic app updates as separate App Store settings on Apple Watch.
Check the separate Automatic Downloads setting
If a new app purchase on another device still appears on your watch, check the App Store setting too. On the Apple Watch, open Settings, tap App Store, then review Automatic Downloads. Apple describes this option as automatically installing the watchOS version of free and paid apps purchased on other devices. On iPhone, Apple’s current Watch guide also points to Watch app → My Watch → App Store for App Store settings. Apple Watch User Guide: Get apps in the App Store on Apple Watch
These controls cover related but distinct cases: Automatic App Install is the setting for compatible apps on iPhone; Automatic Downloads concerns apps purchased on another device. If the problem is new purchases rather than apps you newly installed on iPhone, inspect Automatic Downloads as well. Avoid changing Automatic Updates unless your goal is also to control app updates; Apple lists that as a separate setting.
Remove apps that are already on the watch
Turning off automatic installation does not clear existing watch apps. To remove one without deleting its iPhone counterpart, open the Watch app on iPhone, tap My Watch, select Apps, open the app’s settings, and switch off Show App on Apple Watch. Apple notes that for apps available only on watchOS, the control may instead be Delete app on Apple Watch. Apple Support: Delete apps from your Apple Watch
You can also remove supported apps directly from the watch: press the Digital Crown to show apps, touch and hold the display until the icons jiggle, tap the delete control for the app, and confirm. Apple says not all built-in apps can be removed. Deleting an app from the iPhone also deletes it from Apple Watch, so use the Watch app’s show-or-delete control when you intend to keep the iPhone app. Apple Support: Delete apps from your Apple Watch
Verify the change with a deliberate install
After switching off Automatic App Install, check the Watch app’s app list. Existing apps may still be present, so their presence alone does not mean the setting failed. For a useful check, find a compatible iPhone app that is not installed on the watch and confirm it appears under Available Apps rather than as an installed watch app. Apple’s instructions use the Available Apps section for choosing watch apps to install manually. If the app is a recent purchase, review Automatic Downloads separately. If it was already installed, remove it using the prior section’s steps. These checks distinguish automatic installation from an app’s existing installation or a separate download setting, which often explains why an app still appears after you have changed the main toggle.
If the setting is missing or apps keep appearing
First confirm that you opened the Watch app on the iPhone paired to the watch and looked in My Watch → General. If the behavior involves purchases, look under App Store settings as well. Apple’s current documentation places automatic downloads and updates under App Store, while describing the default installation of compatible iPhone apps separately. If an app remains after both settings are checked, determine whether it is already installed and remove it directly; toggling a future-install preference does not retroactively uninstall apps. When menus or labels differ from these steps, consult Apple’s instructions for the software currently installed on your devices rather than relying on instructions written for an older watchOS release.
