How to Find the Apple Watch Version of an iPhone App You Already Bought

If an app shows as purchased on your iPhone but has no visible download button, first check whether it has a watchOS version at all. On the paired iPhone, open the Watch app and look under My Watch > Apps > Available Apps. If it appears there, tap Install. If it does not, search for the app in the App Store on the watch itself; an iPhone purchase alone does not guarantee a separate watch app.

1. Check the paired iPhone’s Watch app

Open the Watch app on the iPhone paired with your Apple Watch, tap My Watch, then Apps, and scroll to Available Apps. Apple lists apps there when a watch-compatible version is available to add. Tap Install beside the app and allow time for it to appear on the watch. If you do not see the Available Apps section or the app is already listed as installed, press the Digital Crown on the watch and check its Home Screen before troubleshooting the purchase. Apple’s download instructions

This is the quickest test because it checks the iPhone-to-watch installation path directly. It is also a useful distinction: the iPhone App Store purchase page describes the iPhone app, while the Watch app shows which installed iPhone apps have a watch version available for your paired watch. The absence of an Install button in the iPhone App Store does not itself tell you whether a separate watch app exists.

2. Search the App Store on the watch

Press the Digital Crown, open the App Store on Apple Watch, and search by the app’s exact name. Open the result and inspect its detail page. Apple says the watch App Store can search by app name, category, or developer, and that a Download button indicates an app already purchased and available to download again. If you find the virtual-pet game there, use that page to install its watch version. Apple Watch App Store guide

If search returns several similarly named games, compare the developer name and screenshots with the iPhone listing. That helps avoid installing a different pet game with a similar title. A matching name alone is not proof that the watch listing is the same app or purchase.

3. Understand what an iPhone purchase covers

A purchase on iPhone does not necessarily mean there is a watchOS app to download. A developer can provide an iPhone app with a watch companion, a watch app that operates independently, or no watch app. Apple’s developer documentation describes both watch-only apps and watch apps distributed alongside iPhone apps; compatibility and how the developer packaged the products determine what appears on your devices. Apple Developer: Creating independent watchOS apps

For a virtual pet, the watch version may be a small companion for checking in or interacting, while the main game remains on iPhone. Do not assume that progress, pets, inventory, or every game feature will appear on both devices: check the app’s description and the developer’s support information for what the watch edition actually includes. Apple’s installation steps establish availability, not a promise that the two versions share every feature or save state.

4. Check whether the app is already installed

On the watch, press the Digital Crown to open the Home Screen and look for the app. If you use the grid view, the icon may be among other apps; list view can make names easier to scan. Apple also suggests checking the watch Home Screen when an app seems missing. If the app is installed, there is no need to find another download button; launch it from the watch and check whether it opens as expected. Apple’s instructions for finding apps

If it is not visible but the iPhone Watch app shows it as installed, check the watch’s app layout and then return to the Available Apps list. This sequence distinguishes a misplaced icon from an app that has not been installed. Avoid deleting the iPhone app as a first troubleshooting step; it does not create a watch version where none is offered.

5. Verify the Apple Account and purchase record

If the watch App Store does not show the app as purchased, check the iPhone App Store purchase record. On iPhone, open the App Store, tap your account picture, choose Apps & Purchase History > Purchase History, and search for the app. Apple notes that a missing purchase can belong to a different Apple Account, so check the account used when the app was originally obtained. Family Sharing purchases may also appear under a family member’s list rather than My Apps. Apple: See your purchases and subscriptions

A purchase record confirms the transaction or download history; it does not confirm that a watch edition currently exists. If the iPhone purchase appears but the watch listing is absent, continue with compatibility and availability checks rather than repeatedly trying to redeem the iPhone purchase on the watch.

6. Look for a hidden purchase or a changed listing

If you expect the app in your App Store purchase list but cannot find it, check whether it was hidden. Apple explains that hiding an app removes it from the App Store purchase list, and that you must unhide it before redownloading it from that list. On iPhone, open the App Store, tap your account picture, tap your name, then Hidden Purchases; find the app and choose Unhide. Apple: Hide and unhide apps

You can also search the watch App Store directly by the developer’s name if the app title has changed or is hard to locate. If the app no longer appears in the relevant store, the old iPhone receipt cannot by itself make a watchOS listing appear. Apple’s purchase-history guidance also qualifies redownloading by whether the app is still available in the App Store. Apple: Redownload apps

7. Check region and what to do if no watch version appears

Apple notes that some watchOS apps are not available in every region or language. If the app is missing from both Available Apps on the paired iPhone and search on the watch, check the listing in your current App Store region and the developer’s support page. The Apple Watch model and software may also matter if the listing states a compatibility requirement; compare those requirements with your device before concluding that the purchase is faulty. Apple’s Apple Watch app guidance

If you have confirmed the correct Apple Account, checked hidden purchases, searched the watch App Store, and found no compatible listing, contact the game’s developer with the exact app name and your watch model and software version. Ask whether the game currently has a watchOS version for your region and whether it requires the iPhone app. If the developer confirms it should be available, Apple’s support page offers the appropriate next contact for an App Store download issue. This gives support a concrete question to investigate instead of treating the iPhone receipt as proof that a watch app must exist.
