How to Reinstall Apple Watch Apps After Moving to a New iPhone

If third-party apps disappeared from your Apple Watch after you moved to a new iPhone, reinstall them through the paired iPhone’s Watch app or the App Store on the watch. First make sure each app’s iPhone version is installed, then check Watch app → My Watch → Apps → Available Apps and tap Install. If an app is missing there, check its App Store listing and your purchase history before troubleshooting the watch itself.

Why apps may be missing after an iPhone migration

Moving your iPhone data and pairing your Apple Watch are related steps, but an app’s watch version may still need to be installed on the newly paired setup. Apple’s Watch app lists compatible iPhone apps that can be added to the watch under Available Apps; Apple also lets you download watch apps directly from the watch’s App Store. In practice, treat the iPhone app and its watch companion as two installation checks. Apple’s guide to downloading apps on Apple Watch describes both installation routes.

A watch backup preserves settings for third-party apps and the Home Screen app layout, among other settings. That helps explain why a restored arrangement and fully installed watch apps are not always the same thing: check installation status directly rather than assuming the app icon or old setup has transferred completely. Apple’s Apple Watch backup guide details what a backup includes.

Section 2

Step 1: Confirm the watch is paired with the new iPhone

Open the Watch app on the new iPhone and select My Watch. If the watch appears there and shows its settings, continue with app installation. If it does not, first finish pairing the watch with this iPhone; the iPhone Watch app is the control point for managing apps on the paired watch. Apple’s pairing and setup guide explains the setup flow and the option to restore a previous watch backup during setup.

If pairing is already complete, keep the iPhone and watch nearby and confirm they can connect to the internet. These are sensible initial checks when an installation does not start, since the app must be available to download. Avoid unpairing or erasing the watch just to restore one missing app; try the targeted installation steps first.

Step 2: Reinstall the iPhone version of the app

On the new iPhone, search the App Store for the app by its exact name. If it is not installed, download it. Some watch apps depend on an iPhone companion app, and Apple’s install instructions start from apps available on the paired iPhone. Once the phone app is installed, open the Watch app again and check My Watch → Apps → Available Apps. Tap Install beside the app if it appears. Apple’s download instructions identify this as the iPhone route for adding compatible apps to the watch.

If you previously purchased the iPhone app, use the App Store account that originally obtained it. To view eligible past downloads, open the App Store on iPhone, tap your account picture, then Apps & Purchase History → Your Apps → Not on this [device] and redownload the app. Apple says an app redownload does not require paying for that download again. Apple’s redownload guide has the current menu path.

Step 3: Install or redownload the watch app directly

If the app does not show under Available Apps, or if it offers a watch-only version, search for it on the watch itself. Press the Digital Crown, open App Store, tap Search, and enter the app’s name. Open the matching result and tap Get, the price, or the download button, then follow the prompt. Apple says previously purchased apps can be downloaded again without charge when the download button appears. Apple’s Apple Watch App Store guide also explains how to check purchased apps on the watch.

This route is useful when the iPhone app is installed but the companion does not appear in the Watch app. It also helps distinguish a missing installation from a missing listing: search by the app’s exact name and, if needed, its developer. Check that you are selecting the same app, since similarly named apps can have different publishers or watch support.

Section 5

If the app is absent from both installation lists

Check the App Store listing on the iPhone and watch, and verify that the current app offers a watchOS version compatible with your devices. Apple notes that apps may not be available on every device and that some watchOS apps may not be available in every region or language. If the listing no longer offers an Apple Watch version, it will not appear as an installable watch app through these routes. Apple’s app download page covers availability, while its redownload troubleshooting guide explains that device compatibility can keep an app out of a purchase list.

If the app is missing from purchase history, confirm the Apple Account used for the original download; Apple says purchases may be associated with a different account or hidden. For an app originally obtained through Family Sharing, check whether the family member’s purchase is available to you. If the app appears in purchase history but still cannot be downloaded, follow Apple’s troubleshooting steps or contact the app’s developer about its current watch support.

Section 6

If installation stalls or the app will not open

Check the Watch app’s app list again after installation, then find the app on the watch by pressing the Digital Crown. If the download remains pending, confirm the iPhone and watch have an internet connection, leave them nearby, and try again. If the app installs but does not work, open its iPhone companion and complete any in-app setup it requests; then reopen the watch app. App-specific setup varies, so consult that developer’s support instructions if the watch app reports an account or setup problem.

Use the result to decide what to try next: an app visible in Available Apps needs an install tap; an app absent there but present in the watch App Store can be installed from the watch; an app absent from both may lack current watch compatibility, regional availability, or a listing under the account you are using. This sequence narrows the issue without resetting the watch.
